Shentulka

A vast land of scattered settlements around the great metropolis Tyon. The land is named after the land's original inhabitants, the Shentulka, was then the southern kingdom of the empire of Nerath, and since the empire's fall has been under the dictatorial rulership of an ancient purple wyrm.

Common Knowledge

This region has long been the spiritual homeland of the tribal Shentulka people, but it has been a long time since they were the superior force here. Pale-skinned humans of the Empire of Nerath conquered the region and built the great metropolis of Tyon, but that now is the seat of power for an ancient, purple dragon whose name is not spoken but is commonly known by various titles: The Violet King, Lord of the Pit, or King of the Deep. The defeat of the god Bahamut has been felt the most in this region and the humans devoted to their purple dragon lord revel in Tiamat's victory. People are forced to contribute to the 'state' treasury and many fanatical templars serve as tax collectors and bureaucrats. They are also forced to put up with the new underclass of kobolds that the Violet King has allowed move into the city.

Many folk, especially the Shentulka, continue life as normal, wandering the plains in perpetual pursuit of the bison that roam there.

People of Shentulka

shentulkapeople

The land derives its name from the tribal humans, known locally as the Shentulka, but commonly called 'The Druidic Folk' or 'The Plains People', especially in surrounding areas where they have settled. They are nomads that live in tepees and follow the migrating herds of bison and antelope. They do not believe in gods per se, simply thinking of all divine beings as distant or 'past' spirits. (There is no divine power source in their lives, but primal characters are common). The People (as they refer to themselves) honor the many spirits of the land and mostly remain out of politics and the civilised life of their Nerathan conquerors.

The other humans found in the region are the pale-skinned people of northern Nerath that conquered this region hundreds of years ago. It is the Nerathans that are responsible for most permanent settlements (including Tyon) in Shentulka and it is in those settlements where a majority still dwell.

Although they don't exist in great numbers, shifters are found amongst the Shentulka tribes where they live fully integrated lives.

Thri kreen hives roam the plains and deserts and remain independent to all other people, but often trade with the Shentulka.

Kobolds have increased in number in the last decade and now form a significant part of the population in Tyon. They are a protected underclass, that have the favour of The Lord of the Pit, and are in the city to perform menial government jobs including street cleaning, vermin extermination, and even street patrols in the poorer parts of the city. Isolated tribes can also be found in the wild.

Two 'new' races, both prevalent in the city only, are the mojh (humans undertaking rituals to become draconic as a sign of service to their overlord), and the maugs (constructs given life by the Guild of Artificers to serve as the Violet King's elite bullies).

(CNote: The native Shentulka people are based upon the American Indians of the plains with some Celtic influences as well, such as jewellery and the use of standing stones as sacred sites. In areas outside the plains of Shentulka other American Indian cultures may be used. Tyon, and therefore the Nerathi, are based roughly on Rome following its fall).
